TDA PE teacher awarded for commitment to Combined Cadet Force
This prestigious medal is reserved for volunteers who have given over 12 years of continuous service to cadets and youth around the UK. Reaching this milestone is rare, making Gemma’s achievement a profound testament to her commitment to developing young people.
Gemma Wilson, who is a School Staff Instructor (SSI) and PE teacher at Thomas Deacon Academy, received the esteemed award for her exceptional service on Wednesday 5 November.
The medal was formally presented by Captain David Granfield from the cadet training team at the end of a regular parade night. The ceremony took place in the atrium of Thomas Deacon Academy, based in Peterborough, and brought together members of the community, staff, committee and cadets who were delighted to celebrate Gemma’s more than a decade of impactful work.
Emily Gaunt, Principal at Thomas Deacon Academy, was among the many applauding Gemma’s achievement. She said, “Gemma has shaped many young lives over the past 12 years. Her commitment and compassion truly lead ‘The TDA Way’ for our students across our academy.
“The award presentation itself was kept as a surprise by the CCF team, who could not be more proud of her dedication and the difference she makes to our CCF contingent.”
Thomas Deacon Academy is one of the few schools in the region to host a Combined Cadet Force, which provides unique opportunities for students to develop important leadership, character and life skills through activities sponsored by the Ministry of Defence.
Ms Wilson said: “I am thrilled to receive this medal, but the real reward is watching our cadets grow into confident, capable, and compassionate young leaders. Twelve years seems like a long time, but when you spend it seeing our students achieve things they never thought possible, it soon goes by!
“The honour absolutely belongs to the whole CCF and TDA community, from the supportive parents and staff, to the incredible children. Serving over a decade has been both a privilege and a joy so far. I’m proud to be part of a programme that makes such a difference in young peoples’ lives.”
Thomas Deacon Academy remains committed to investing in student programmes that build character, leadership, and drive positive change in Peterborough and beyond.
